Clay's Compromise quilt block

Clay's Compromise
April 9, 1933-A Patch Here, Corner Off There-and "Clay's Compromise" Takes Quilt Form was the title of Nancy Cabot's column in the Chicago Tribune that introduced the Clay's Compromise quilt block.

She says the block is "designed to picture the result of Henry Clay's attempt to obtain judicious legislation for both the north and the south on the slavery problem of the 1800's."

The compromise Clay introduced encountered alot of opposition and had so many amendments that "the final settlement was a hodgepodge" thus the look of the block!

Quite a different block from Clay's Choice that was introduced just a week ago.

The Clay's Compromise quilt block can be found in BlockBase as #3182 like Nancy Cabot had drawn it-

I think Clay's Compromise is an odd block but look at what it could look like as a quilt-

To make this block, I added a couple of seams to divide it into four paper pieced sections for ease of construction.  I didn't want to have to make templates or sew any Y-seams.  Can you see the change? You can download my pattern here.

  1. Thank you for showing what a whole quilt would look like using the block. I had thought about asking you to do that is the past with other blocks...don't have any EQ software. Could you please continue to do it for all blocks?

    1. I will try to do it more often especially if I can't find a real quilt to show.

  2. Thanks for showing Clay in quilt arrangements.
