Bleeding Hearts

July 2, 1933- "Quilt lovers, eager for something new in designs, will welcome the "Bleeding Hearts" pattern." wrote Nancy Cabot when introducing this pattern.

She felt the bleeding hearts and lacy basket would "recall the old fashioned flower gardens of mother's and grandmother's day."

This applique block looks complicated to me.
So much so that I did not even attempt to draw it!

There is a beautiful example of this Bleeding Hearts quilt and the story to go along with it.

A newspaper article written about the quilt was entitled, Unemployed Seamstress' Quilt Wins First Prize in City Handiwork Contest.  First prize was $10.00!




Frances Klemenz made the Bleeding Hearts quilt and entered it in the 1933 Sears National Quilt Contest.  She is said to have worked some days from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on this quilt. She won first place for Louisville, Kentucky and then third place in the Chicago regional round. The quilt was one of thirty quilts displayed at the 1933 World's Fair.  Over 24,000 quilts entered the contest!
