The Rambler

April 11, 1933-Rose and Green Are Ideal Colors for The Rambler is the title of Nancy Cabot's Chicago Tribune article introducing The Rambler quilt block.

The Rambler Rose bush is said to have been the inspiration of this pattern.  Nancy described the pattern as an old one that was rarely seen in the 1930's.  She said the blocks were to be set together with strips of green.


I made my 6" block from just three paper pieced sections like this-

The block below is an antique block at The Spencer Museum of Art and is made just the way Nancy suggested!

Here's an antique quilt made from The Rambler quilt block.  It's owned by Barbara Brackman and she has written a post about the block here.  Electric Quilt's BlockBase program that I refer to so often is the CD-ROM version of Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Pattern book. The block is set on point in this quilt and there is no sashing as Nancy Cabot suggested there be.  The center square in a square block is all one color also.
